Bill fixing number of corporators in civic bodies passed
The Bill was presented before the House by minister of state (MoS) for urban development Dr Ranjit Patil. The Bill has suggested amendments in the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act.
To avoid injustice to newly included areas in municipal corporations, the state assembly on Wednesday passed a Bill, enabling increasing the number of minimum members by six and reducing maximum number of corporators by 60 in civic bodies with a population over 24 lakh.
The Bill was presented before the House by minister of state (MoS) for urban development Dr Ranjit Patil. The Bill has suggested amendments in the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act. The governor had issued an ordinance in this regard on June 16, 2016.
The amendment would provide one elected representative for every additional 50,000 population instead of the earlier provision of 1 lakh population in corporations with a population of over 24 lakh. The amendment would also provide election of one representative for every 1 lakh population in civic bodies with a population of over 30 lakh.
With the passage of the Bill, corporations with a population of over 24 lakh each would have a maximum of 161 elected representatives as against the earlier provision of 221, and corporations with a population of over 30 lakh each would have a maximum of 175 corporators.
