A reserved forest famous for its natural beauty and housing one of the 12 jyotirlingas, Bhimashankar draws a large number of nature lovers, trekkers, bird watchers and devotees.

Around 10,000 tribals live in Bhimashankar and surrounding villages. For policing purpose, the area falls under the jurisdiction of Godegaon police station that is located 46 km away. The new chowki would benefit 10 villages near Bhimashankar.

The new police chowky will have a police sub-inspector and 10 constables.

Assistant inspector Manoj Yadav of Godegaon police station told DNA, “The existing police station is 45 km away from Bhimashankar and villagers had to travel the long distance to file compliant. Even visitors faced the same hardship.”

Welcoming the state move, Yadav said, “As per the sanction order, staff will be redeployed from other stations. The station has a vehicle for patrolling duty that will help in controlling the major problem of hunting in the area,” he said.

The Pune rural police would be added to the Pune rural police at MIDC Ranjangaon under the Shirur police and Chikhalgaon under the Khed police station.
