On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking will cut down its bus operations by almost half in the morning and afternoon. The main reason behind the move is Holi, the day when a maximum number of its (BEST's) 42 lakh commuters is busy playing with colours.
As per a statement released by BEST's spokesperson Hanumant Gophane, "On Monday morning, out of the 2,602 services, 1,345 will not ply." This means, only 1,245 services will operate on city's roads. Similarly, in the afternoon, only 1,631 bus services will operate.
In all, BEST has a fleet of 4,289 buses, which include single-decker, double-decker, midi and air-conditioned.
BEST officials said due to low patronage during the first half of the day on Holi, it is better to rationalise the operations to ensure unnecessary expenditures are not incurred. Even operations of air-conditioned buses will be reduced as it largely caters to the office-going crowd and public and private offices will remain shut on Monday.
