With the high court adjourning the hearing in the case until June 22, colleges feel the freeze on admissions will only delay the process indefinitely.
The best-of-five policy may have put smiles on the faces of SSC students, but has put junior colleges in a spot, with admissions indefinitely delayed due to a court battle over it.
With the high court adjourning the hearing in the case until June 22, colleges feel the freeze on admissions will only delay the process indefinitely. Principals say delayed admissions will cut short the academic year and put teachers under tremendous pressure to complete the syllabus.
“Last year, the court battle went on till July-end delaying admissions. Colleges had to reopen in August and we even cancelled a unit test in the first term. Teachers had to take extra lectures to finish the syllabus and it affected students as it was all done in a hurry. With the government not letting us start the minority quota admissions, it will create even more problems. We need at least a week to fill up minority quotas and then a minimum of 20 days to finish admissions for open seats,” said TA Shiware, principal of Hinduja College, Charni Road.
Kirti Narain, principal, Jai Hind College, Churchgate said, “We are hoping the high court will remove the stay on admissions and let us start the process of filling up minority seats. Students have been coming to college to inquire about the start of admissions and we have no answer for them. It is a distressing time for everyone.”
Madhavi Pethe, principal of ML Dahanukar College, Vile Parle, feels teachers will be forced to work on holidays and even during vacations to finish the syllabus. “From February, every year, teachers are busy with HSC examinations or paper evaluation. With the academic year beginning in August, just count the numbers of days left with teachers till February. Students are the ultimate sufferers.”
“We are not sure how we are supposed to conduct all unit tests and term exams in just five to six months,” Pethe added.
Even parents are harried over the delay. Arundhati Chauhan, president of the parents’ teachers united forum, said, “After the debacle twice in the past over the policies, the state government should have been careful about the policy they had announced for students of the state board. They shouldn’t have left any loopholes that can be challenged in court. The state government and petitioners are playing with the lives of so many students. The parents of students from ICSE schools had enough time to move the court since February. They did not bother to clarify the issue earlier.”
