The Kalyan Railway Police arrested a couple for allegedly ‘stealing’ a ten-day-old infant, on Monday. The baby has been recovered and sent to JJ Hospital for primary care.
The accused have been identified as Razia Mohammed, 30, and her husband Ghouse Mohammed, 35. Senior police inspector AR Jagtap said that they have been booked under section 365 (abduction with secret intent and wrongful confinement) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.
The Kalyan railway court on Tuesday remanded them in police custody till December 16.
According to the police, Ghouse is a shoe-shine man at Kalyan railway station and Razia, who is a handicap, begs on the station premises. She had lost her legs in a railway accident. The couple had no children.
The accused told the police that they found the newborn abandoned between platforms 6 and 7 at Kalyan railway station on December 9.
“If she had found the unidentified newborn abandoned on the railway premises, she should have informed the police immediately or handed the infant over to us,” said Jagtap.
The officer added that Razia took the infant around in Igatpuri, Karjat, Ambernath, Titwala and Badlapur for five days while begging. She was nabbed at Karjat railway station.
The incident came to light when an informer told the Karjat railway police that childless Razia was seen carrying an infant. Acting on the information, the railway police intercepted Razia at Karjat station on Monday afternoon.
