Occupants of buildings on the Chira Bazaar-Kalbadevi belt that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is looking to take possession of for implementation of Colaba-Seepz line metro project have been told to be ready to vacate their premises by October.

There is, however, still no written word from the authorities on the issue, residents say. Authorities are looking to take possession of a bunch of buildings for the project.

“They have held negotiations sporadically over the past few months and now, we have been told to be ready to vacate the premises by September-October. At the most, we feel we will be asked to move out by Diwali-end. Though they have not initiated any agreements, we are assuming that should be done in some time,” said Shabbir Masani, an owner of a shop in Flower building, which is better known as 541 on JSS Road in Chira Bazaar.

Like Masani, occupants of the MMRCL-sought buildings have been offered an extra 15-20 per cent space post redevelopment in the case of commercial units. In the case of residential units, owners are being offered 30-35 per cent extra space if the flat size is over 500 sq ft. If it is less than that, the person could get as much as double the area he/she has post redevelopment.

Most said that negotiations are still on as the offer from MMRCL is still unclear and that they are yet to hear from them.

When DNA contacted MMRCL, the PR agency asked for a questionnaire but did not respond.
