BDD Chawl to burn Nirav Modi effigy in holi

With an intention of attacking the rampant corruption in the country, residents of Worli’s BDD Chawl number 76 and 77 will burn an effigy of Nirav Modi, who has been recently accused of a scam involving Rs 11,500 crore. This will be a part of the holika dahan ritual.

Members of the Vighnaharta Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal have erected a 58 feet tall holi — which they say is the tallest in the country so far, along with an effigy of Nirav Modi, who is a key accused in the PNB scam.

“Our society always comes up with new themes each year based on the happenings in that particular year. This year, Nirav Modi has been making news for all the wrong reasons. At a time when people like us are working so honestly, those like Modi are looting the country in all wrong ways. We want to symbolically put an end to such tendencies,” said Pratik Kale, secretary of the society.

Kale said that a group of 15 youngsters, none of who are artists, worked on making the holi and the effigy for the last 15 days. “First, we planned to take up the issue of sexual harassment. But after the Nirav Modi scam broke out, we thought that the issue was more recent and needs to be taken up.” he added.
