Two days after the drowning at Bandra Bandstand, the body of Ramesh Walunje, who drowned trying to rescue the girls who had fallen in the sea while clicking selfies on Saturday morning, was found on Monday afternoon at the Mahim shore. Walunje, a driver, rescued one girl but he did not return after he went in to save the other.

While the fire brigade had stopped the rescue operations on Saturday evening after sunset to resume on Monday, the coast guard had broadened the search to Mahim, Dadar and Worli.The body of the other girl, Tarannum Ansari (18), has still not been found.

"The body was stuck in a marsh near Mahim Creek. It was spotted by a local fisherman, who brought it ashore and called us. The body was bloated but identified by the relatives. We have sent it for a post-mortem," said a police officer.According to the police, Ansari, Anjum Khan (17) and Mustareen Khan (18), all from Govandi's Baiganwadi, had come to the seafacing promenade near the Bandra fort for the first time, bunking college. When they were trying to take a selfie, Ansari and Anjum slipped into the water.

Leaders from the Shiv Sena, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party met Walunje's family on Monday, with many assuring them financial help.Walunje stayed at the Jaffar Buwa Colony, a stone's throw away from the seafront. He hailed from Rajapur and had been living in the Bandra chawl for close to 20 years. He is survived by his wife and three children — daughters Raveena (16) and Manasi (14) and son Hruday (3).
