MUMBAI
A constable was taken aback to receive an SMS, saying Rs1,500 was withdrawn from his salary account. On rushing to the ATM at Lower Parel, he realised 120 Euros were withdrawn from his account at an ATM in Greece. He is one of the many policemen from the state police whose Axis Bank salary accounts were compromised and money withdrawn from ATMs in Greece on June 10 and 11.
“In a case of credit card cloning, Rs 17.18 lakh was withdrawn from 36 salary accounts of policemen. The data was stolen from the Axis Bank’s ATM opposite the state police headquarters at Colaba,” said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III).
“There have been several such cases between April and May. Apart from policemen, other customers too were affected,” said deputy police commissioner SN Chaudhary.
An Axis Bank spokesperson said: “Less than 50 accounts were impacted through transactions at compromised ATMs in Mumbai belonging to multiple banks. We have reversed the impact in all such accounts with immediate effect.”
