Good days are ahead for sports enthusiasts and budding athletes as two multi-sports complexes in Andheri and Dahisar will be ready in a few months. The facilities are among the many projects that the Garden department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has carried out in the current financial year.

The Olympic-standard sports complex at Veera Desai Road in Andheri, spread over 49,000 sqmt, will be ready by March and open to all. The Rs 23-crore facility will be the first of its kind meant for the common public in the city.

Dahisar is expected to get a sports complex with an area of 51,000 sq metres by May or June. The project is estimated worth Rs 22 crore.

The civic body has lined up more such projects. The work on the first Japanese garden has already started in Bhandup on a 2-acre plot and is expected to be ready in a couple of months. The garden will have a special walking track, gazebo, red hill earth, and aromatic semi-shade shrubs among other horticultural works.

JJ flyover, Nagpada junction, Worli sea face promenade and carter road are being beautified, the plan to beautify Dahisar river, Bandar Pakhadi lake in Kandivali, Sion lake, Poisar lake are still pending.

While the garden department made welcome strides, the BMC is still struggling with its green efforts. Its has again failed to execute a waste to energy project. The BMC had planned to set up a plant at the Deonar dumping ground to convert 600 tons of garbage into energy daily. However, the civic body has failed to appoint a contractor despite repeated attempts.
