Pune is eagerly waiting for Sunday — the concluding day of the 83rd All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, a prestigious literary event in the state’s cultural calendar.

The organisers of the event, which is to be held from March 26-28, have invited both Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and actor Amitabh Bachchan for the ceremony.

On Wednesday, Chavan had expressed his displeasure over Bachchan’s presence at a function for the inauguration of the second phase of the Bandra-Worli sea link. The chief minister insisted that he was not aware that the actor had been invited as a special guest.

In fact, Mumbai Congress Committee president Kripa Shankar Singh had boycotted the event on grounds that Bachchan was the brand ambassador for the BJP-led Gujarat government and his relationship with the Gandhi family has been strained. Chavan also indicated that he would have preferred to stay away had he known of the actor’s presence.

However, Ulhas Pawar, a Legislative Council member and the executive president of the literary meet, said they didn’t expect a similar outcome since the meet is not a government event. Reception committee chairman Satish Desai confirmed that Bachchan and Chavan would share the dais during the concluding session of the literary meet.

Desai also put to rest the speculation the Bachchan’s presence on the concluding day of the literary event would result in curtailment of the session.

The last day of the event is normally devoted to adoption of resolutions related to Marathi language Desai said the customary debate and adoption of resolutions in respect of Marathi and Maharashtra would be carried on as per the schedule and Bachchan’s security and presence would have no bearing on the deliberations of the assembled gathering of writers and book lovers.

Bachchan is expected to recite a few poems penned by his poet father late Harivanshrai Bachchan.
