All food and beverages along with retail outlets on the twelve metro stations of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor are using alternatives of plastic after the state government imposed the plastic ban, claimed the operator of Metro-1.

The operator Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) said that all the 44 stall operators in metro stations have moved to using alternatives like paper cups, paper bags and cloth bags. MMOPL has rented out real estate space to around 44 retail and food and beverage outlets on several metro stations that helps it generate revenue.

"We have shared timely communication to all the outlets at the Metro stations regarding the plastic ban and suggested alternatives. MMOPL undertakes eco-friendly measures having positive impact on the local community where Metro operates," MMOPL spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added, "Mumbai Metro is fully devoted to its green promise and Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. A well-devised cleaning strategy and its tidy execution has made Mumbai Metro to be one of the cleanest public transport systems in India."

In July 2017, MMOPL had also installed plastic bottle crushing machines for recycling of plastic that is later used as raw material for making clothes, carpets and grocery bags.
