The mental unsoundness card played by Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, 23, has come a cropper.

Rejecting his plea for the constitution of a medical board to examine his psychological state, the Bombay high court on Wednesday said Kasab has been in a sound state of mind.
In an application filed earlier this week, Kasab’s advocates had contended that even after his arrest, he had the time to introspect but he showed no remorse for his crime. This, his application stated, was “extremely unusual and quite unprecedented”.

Justices Ranjana Desai and RV More, however, said they had interviewed Kasab over video-conferencing earlier, and he had expressed his wish to come to the high court and follow proceedings. Kasab had also said he had no faith in the Indian judiciary and wanted to be tried outside India.

“This showed he was making statements with a sound mind and clear perception and there was nothing wrong with his frame of mind,” the court noted while dismissing his plea.
