Mumbai Police forms 'Nirbhaya Squad' for women safety - Know all its functions here

Mumbai Police also said that a review meeting regarding the safety of women will also take place in the first week of every month.

Just a few days after the horrifying Sakinaka rape case in Maharashtra's Mumbai, the city's police has formed a special squad consisting of women officials to be known as 'Nirbhaya Squad', Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale said in a circular issued on Tuesday. 

Every police station in Mumbai will consist of a 'Nirbhaya Squad', a special women's safety cell which will also consist of a woman assistant inspector or sub-inspector, a woman constable, a male constable, and a driver.

Mumbai Police also said that a review meeting regarding the safety of women will also take place in the first week of every month, chaired by the Additional Commissioner of Police of the Regional Division.

In the circular, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale also assured that strict patrolling will take place in all the areas in the city where crimes against women are likely.

  1. Every police station will have a 'Nirbhaya Squad' or a special women's safety cell. 
  2. 'Mobile-5' vehicle will also be assigned to every squad. 
  3. The 'Nirbhaya' Squad; will participate in a two-day training where they will also be trained about collection intelligence from sensitive areas such as girls hostels, children’s shelter homes, and orphanages.
  4. Police will also offer counseling to the victims of sexual harassment/assault under an initiative called 'Saksham'.
  5. Strict patrolling will take place in all the areas in the city where crimes against women are likely. 
  6. Police will also be assisting women who are commuting alone at night and will help arrange vehicles for them if requested.
  7. A 'Nirbhaya complaint box' will be set up at all the schools, colleges, and hostels where girls or women can safely put in their complaints if any.
