A day after addressing a party rally in Delhi where he kicked off the party’s campaign for the assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime minister nominee Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on Monday.

Though Modi will be coming to Mumbai for a non-party function, the BJP which believes that this combination of Hindutva and development can propel them to victory, will arrange for massive reception for him when he lands at the Mumbai airport around 4pm.

This will be Modi’s first visit to Mumbai after he was declared as prime ministerial candidate.

Later, he will drive down to inaugurate Mumbai Diamond Merchant Association’s Diamond Hall at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Bandra-Kurla Complex. BJP leaders said he also had a function lined up with a an industry association later in the evening.

The BJP hopes that projecting Modi will help them strengthen their core and auxiliary constituency.

Senior BJP leader said: “Modi’s image as a decisive leader and as a doer had won support from the corporate as well as the party and the common man.”

Recently, BJP national president Rajnath Singh inaugurated the new building of Bombay Bullion Association. Later, the president of the association Mohit Kamboj had also joined the BJP.

BJP leaders said that Modi is likely to increase his engagement in Maharashtra keeping an eye on 2014 Lok Sabha polls and considering the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats which are next only to Uttar Pradesh.

In 2009, the Shiv Sena and BJP won just 20 of these seats with 25 going to the ruling Congress-NCP combine largely because of the presence of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navinirman Sena, which cut into the opposition votes in the fray.

A BJP leader said that Modi is also focusing on Mumbai which has a significant presence of Gujaratis. In 2009, the BJP-Sena drew a blank in all of Mumbai’s Lok Sabha constituencies.
