After Ayodhya verdict, avoid celebrations and maintain peace, say Muslim leaders

Muslim leaders at a gathering in the city on Tuesday urged people to refrain from any kind of celebrations after the Ayodhya verdict.

They also said that no matter what the verdict is, the disputed land would always be remembered as the place where Babri Masjid once stood.

“For us, it is still there and shall continue to be there, no matter what the court feels. We will refrain from any show of emotions, whether the order goes for us or against, and approach the Supreme Court,” said Maulana Syed Ather Ali, executive body member of the Muslim Personal Law Board.

Around 50 ulemas had gathered for the meeting, which was held at the Jamia Qadriya Ashrafiya Madrassa (JQAM) on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road near Grant Road. When asked by media persons if they would consider the demand of giving up the land for a temple, the clerics said no.

“As per the Shariat, if a masjid is made at a location, that land can’t be used for any other purpose. But if for some reason it is proved that the mosque came up in a wrongful manner, then it cannot be considered as a masjid,” said Maulana Syed Moinuddin Ashraf, president of the JQAM.

“Muslims have martyred themselves for our nation and they should do all they can to maintain peace,” said Maulana Mansoor Ali Khan, general secretary of the All India Sunni Jamiyatul Ulema.

“India is a peaceful country, and we appeal to the people from all faiths to maintain pace and harmony after the order. There are some people who like creating mischief, and will try to do that this time around as well. The police should arrest them and the public should be careful of them, as it ultimately ends up as a loss to the nation,” added Ashraf.
