After 18 months of waiting, the state government finally filled the post of state Human Rights Commission chairman by appointing former chief justice of Kerala High Court SR Bannurmath. He is the third chairman of the commission, having succeeded justices Arvind Sawant and Kshitij Vyas.
The new chairman assumed office on Thursday after meeting governor K Sankaranarayanan. After taking over, Bannurmath said, “Twelve thousand cases are pending before me because of the absence of a chief for 18 months. It is big challenge. I have decided to dispose of the cases as early as possible.”
The new chairman has decided to travel across the state and communicate directly with the people to understand their problems.
“I will hold meetings with the schools, colleges, NGOs and activists. The focus will be on sexual abuse of children and women, child labour, human trafficking, suicide of farmers and cyber crime,” Bannurmath said.
According to a political observer, the appointment comes in the wake of NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s criticism of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan for keeping important posts lying vacant.
