Advocate files PIL to add one more division to GLC

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking directions to the Directorate of Education, Mumbai University to allow adding one more division to the Government Law College (GLC) to ensure that student intake for the three and five year law course is not affected.

The Government and University reduced seats at GLC, from 240 for the three year LLB course to 180, and for the five year course of LLM to 120 seats. The college has been making several representations to the government for allowing to increase one division for the academic year 2017-18, so that the shortfall caused in the seats, which could hamper prospects of many aspiring students, will not be affected.

The PIL is filed by Advocate Naveen Chomal, who states that his daughter may have to opt for another college due to the shortage of seats. Chomal, through his petition, prays that directions be given to authorities to allow the college to start one more division for both the courses.

Further it has asked that pending hearing and final disposal, the impugned order dated May 17, issued by the government restricting admission capacity be stayed. The PIL will come up for hearing in due course of time.
