MUMBAI
An executive magistrate on Tuesday couldn’t record the statement of additional director general of police Ranjit Singh Sahay (in pic), who allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself on fire on Sunday, as Sahay’s critical condition did not permit him to speak.
Plastic surgeon at Bombay Hospital Dr Vinay Jacobs said, “The toxic load of burnt tissues inside his body is immense. His vital organs could eventually bloat up or malfunction.”
Sources said foul play has been ruled out and it has been ascertained that Sahay set himself ablaze. The police, however, denied that he had tried to burn his wife and two daughters too. His family’s statement hasn’t been recorded yet.
On Monday night, the Malabar Hill police recorded the statement of KL Bishnoi, ADGP (planning and coordination), who lives in the same building as Sahay in Malabar Hill and took him to hospital.
Bishnoi said Sahay’s wife Ralu had called him and told him about it. When he (Bishnoi) entered the house, he found water everywhere, which the police suspect was poured to douse the fire.
Bishnoi added that he didn’t find any can of inflammable liquid in the living room where Sahay was lying. When Bishnoi tried to talk to him, he couldn’t converse due to burns.
Sources said that after Sahay was admitted, he told the doctor that an oil lamp fell on him and he caught fire. This is said to be the only conversation he had since hospitalisation.
