Additional DGP Ranjit Kumar Sahay, who set himself on fire, battles for life

The condition of additional director general of police Ranjit Kumar Sahay, who  allegedly attempted suicide on Sunday, has taken a turn for the worse.

Doctors at Bombay Hospital said the officer was sedated and put on ventilator on Monday.

“The first three days for the burns patients are extremely crucial.

The upper half of his body is charred and we are hoping that the lungs heal gradually as he is on ventilator,” said Dr Sagar Sakle, officer on special duty at the hospital.

Through Sunday, Sahay was being supplied oxygen through an endo tracheal tube which was inserted into his nasal cavity.

However, he has been put on ventilator life support the next day.

He has sustained 55 percent superficial to deep burns.

Police are still clueless as to what prompted additional director general of police Ranjit Kumar Sahay to allegedly attempt suicide on Sunday. Sahay was admitted to hospital on Sunday with burn injuries.

Speaking to dna, state home minister RR Patil said, “His house has not been searched till now. No suicide note has been found.

We have initiated an inquiry and it will take some time before we reach to any conclusion.” Patil also said that he had spoken to the doctors and the best of treatment is being provided to Sahay. He, however, could not meet the family.

Even though statements of the shocked family members have not been recorded so far, it was rumoured that Sahay wrote a suicide note in which he had mentioned the name of a senior IPS official who was allegedly pressurising him. However, director general of police Sanjeev Dayal said the key of the flat are with Sahay’s wife and it has not been searched.

So, there was no question of finding any suicide note. He further said that since the family is in a state of shock, it will be inappropriate to disturb them now. “The exact motive behind the incident has yet to be ascertained,” he said.

On Monday evening several IPS officers went to meet Sahay’s family at the Bombay Hospital. According to some media reports, Sahay wanted to eat chicken but his wife refused as Ganeshotsav is on. This allegedly irked him and he left the house.

He had dinner outside following which he returned home with a can of petrol. He got into a tiff with his wife and started pouring petrol on his wife and the two daughters. The family members ran inside the bedroom and locked it. A few minutes later they saw fumes emanating from the room.

Apparently, Sahay had given a letter of his superiors a few days before the incident. However, the contents of the letter are not known.
