Activist Vihar Durve recently filed a Right To Information (RTI) application asking Mumbai University (MU) for data on students caught copying in university examinations in the past 4 years. Though MU did reveal the number of students, it did not answer his questions regarding the action taken against them, nor why the information was not uploaded on its website.
According to data provided by the university in reply to the RTI, 460 students were caught cheating in 2011, 617 in 2012 (the highest in 4 years), 563 in 2013 and 371 in 2014.
Durve has also asked the Mumbai Police for the same data. He had asked for details on the action taken against students caught copying, the reason they gave for copying, rules and regulations applicable in such cases and the university's expectations from students, parents, the civil society and NGOs to avert copying. Durve also requested the university to publish the related information on its website.
"I have just been provided with information on the number of students caught while cheating. I have not been answered about what action was taken and why this information is not available on any website by the university. I have filed a similar RTI with the Mumbai police. I will see if the figures tally. I am awaiting for the police's reply now."
Dinesh Bhonde, controller of examination, Mumbai University, said, "If Durve goes for an appeal, we can provide them the information regarding reasons and actions being taken on students cheating too."
