A police officer attached to the coastal police who allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the wife of an accused was arrested by the ACB here today, ACB sources said.

Police sub-inspector Hemant S Katkar (30) who was posted to the Arnala coastal police station was arrested while he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from an arrested person's wife who complained to the ACB, an ACB spokesperson said.

The arrested man's wife had approached the police officer to help bail out her husband for which he allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh, which was reduced to Rs 2 lakh. Also arrested in connection with the case is an auto rickshaw driver who has been identified as Anil Suwarna, the ACB said.

An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the duo at the Arnala police station under the Vasai division, the ACB said, adding that further investigations are on.
