RTI data collected by the Praja Foundation has revealed that the occurrence of dengue has increased by 98 per cent in the past five years. Despite the increase, areas such as Andheri West, Ghatkopar East, and Chembur have not reported a single case of dengue this year.

According to the reply received from public hospitals, against a total of 7,261 cases recorded in the year 2013-14, the year 2017-18 saw a total of 14,345 cases.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation refused to comment on the report since they are not sure of the data received by the Praja Foundation. "We haven't seen the data received by them. There might be duplication of data too. We have been taking timely precautionary measures every monsoon season," said Dr Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer.

According to the report, there has been a massive rise in dengue cases in the city in comparison to other monsoon diseases. Milind Mhaske, Project Director, Praja Foundation, said, "As per the reply received, ward-wise major dengue hotspots in 2017-18 were Andheri East (K/E ward) with 184 cases and parts of Borivali West (R/Central ward) with 109 cases.

In wards like K/W comprising Andheri West, Juhu, and Vile Parle, no dengue cases have been reported in the past two years.

"In K/East ward, the number of dengue case reduced from the previous year, but the count still remained the highest across the city," added Milind Mhaske, Programme Director, Praja Foundation.

"We are bringing this report so that ward-wise analysis is done. The civic body does not analyse the report on seasonal diseases. We need to tackle the health issues and get answers to the problem. Rather than getting in a defensive mode, the civic body can come up with an advanced solution," Mhaske added.

Besides filing an RTI, every year the Praja Foundation also conducts a household survey with Hansa Research to incorporate citizens' view on various health issues. The sample set includes around 20,000 households across the city.
