50,000 plastic bottles donated at Mumbai airport

Nearly 50,000 plastic bottles have been recycled in the last five months with the help of crushing machines installed at the two terminals of Mumbai airport as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Post donating plastic bottles at crushing machines installed at both terminal-1 and 2 of Mumbai airport, the donors are rewarded with discount vouchers.

As per data shared by Wild West Media states that the plastic bottle waste weighing around 440.802 kgs was collected between September 2018 and February 18, 2019 at terminal 1 followed by 446.22 kgs of plastic bottle water being collected from terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport.

In terms of exact numbers, total 24,489 bottles were collected from terminal-1 and 24,790 from terminal totaling to somewhere around 49,279. Post the donation of plastic bottle by any individual, they are entitled to discounts offered by various brands having a tie-up with bottle crushing machine owners.

The Mumbai airport is the country's second busiest single runway airport, having more than 48 million passengers on a yearly basis. Its terminal-1 is majorly used by low cost airlines while terminal-2 is used by premium airlines including that of Air India.

After the crushed bottles are recycled, they are used as raw materials for making clothes, carpets and grocery bags. These machines are also installed at various Metro stations in the city. As per data, between July 2017 and April 2018, around 1.12 lakh plastic bottles were recycled. They collection has mainly been done from Andheri and Ghatkopar Metro station that witnesses majority of footfall. In the past such machines were also installed at stations.
