MUMBAI: At least five people were killed and 30 feared trapped after a seven-storeyed building collapsed in Mumbai's Borivali suburb on Wednesday evening, police said.

Eight injured people were rushed to the nearby Bhagwati Hospital, police said.

Police said several fire brigade tenders were rushed to the Laxmi Chhaya building, which houses 12 families, and rescue operations were on late into night.

"A portion of the building near Babhai Naka in western suburb Borivili collapsed around 5.30 p.m. killing at least five people. Five men and three women have been rescued by police and fire brigade personnel and were rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital. Rescue operations are still on," a senior police official told.

Eyewitnesses at the spot said that at least 30 people, mostly shopkeepers, their customers and some of those who lived in the ground floor of the building, were still feared trapped under the debris.

"The 30-year-old Laxmi Chhaya building mostly housed shops on the ground floor, while the remaining six floors were residential flats. At least 150 people were believed to have been inside the building when a part of it collapsed," the police official said.

"There were several business establishment in the ground floor of the ill-fated building. We fear shopkeepers and customers in these business establishments are still buried in the debris," the official said.

Over a dozen fire tenders along with paramedical personnel were engaged in rescue operations, though heavy rain in the late evening hampered their efforts.
