According to the police, the deceased, Asma Umba lived on the second floor in Ajay Menson building, Behrampada, Oshiwara, Andheri (West), along with her son Muzahid. Her husband Mushtafa, who works in a hotel in Bandra, would come home once a week. Umba also had two stepsons — one who lives in Nallasopara and the other at Mira Road. Both would visit Umba’s residence to meet her twice or thrice in a month.

“On Sunday morning, Umba’s stepson Mubarak came to meet her and left the flat around noon. The incident came to light when Muzahid came home at around 1pm and found his mother lying in a pool of blood with injury marks on her neck. He cried out for help, following which the neighbours gathered and rushed Umba to Cooper hospital where she was declared dead,” said a police officer. “After investigation, it appears that someone killed Umba by slitting her throat,” he added.

“We are questioning Mubarak, Mushtafa and a few neighbours to find out that who had visited the flat between noon to 1pm at the time of incident. A murder case has been registered,” said senior police inspector, Dilip Rupawate of Oshiwara police station.“Mubarak has said in his statement that Umba left the flat to drop him downstairs,” said another police officer.
