A special court under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) has convicted four robbers who had barged into the office of a businessman at Kalbadevi in 2005 and looted cash, gold ornaments and mobile phones, collectively worth over Rs2.13 lakh. However, two of the convicts’ associates were acquitted for want of evidence.

On October 22, Judge Puranik sentenced Vikas Chalke, 49; Vishwas Satardekar, 35; and Rakesh Sawant, 33, to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs5 lakh each. Naresh Kadam, 37, was sentenced to five years’ RI. Vilas Magar, 38, and Maruti Mali, 36, were acquitted.

The prosecution said Manoj Dayachand Jain, 45 — proprietor of MM Telecommunication Centre — was in his office at Sheikh Memon Street in Kalbadevi on October 1, 2005, when four persons barged in around 8.20 pm. They robbed cash, his mobile and gold ornaments.

They also robbed Vikhram Jain, a jeweller who had come to meet Jain. Both the victims lodged a complaint with the LT Marg police station.

The police arrested the six from different places in the city in December 2005. Three choppers, two mobiles, Rs6,000 cash and 30 gm of gold were recovered from them. The six were booked under MCOCA because they had been charge sheeted in many cases before, the police said.
