A 30-year-old cook on his way to work on a bicycle was allegedly mowed down by a speeding bus in Andheri leading to his death.

According to the police, Pramod Mandal, a resident of Andheri, was on his bicycle on Friday morning when the school bus driver Mohammed Usman Shaikh, 65, who was allegedly driving rashly, tried to overtake Mandal at Shastri Nagar but hit him instead.

Pramod worked with several households in the Amboli locality.

"When the locals and eye witnesses informed us about the incident, we rushed to the spot and conducted the panchnama and the body was sent for post mortem. The driver was nabbed by the locals and was handed over to us," said a Amboli police officer.

Bharat Gaikwad, Senior Inspector, Amboli police station, said, "We have arrested the accused under sections 304 (A) (Causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The accused has been sent to Judicial custody and we are investigating further."
