A 27-year-old undertrial prisoner committed suicide inside Taloja jail in the wee hours of Thursday. The deceased, identified as Pankaj Singh, hanged himself from the ventilation inside the toilet. He was a resident of Dahisar.According to the police, Singh was arrested for extortion and kidnapping following which he was sent to jail on January 2. He had been reportedly depressed ever since he entered the jail and hardly spoke to his inmates.Jail authorities said the incident occurred around 4.50am, minutes after Singh entered the toilet. He hanged himself from the ventilation using a bed sheet. The authorities then rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. It is, however, still a mystery how he managed to reach the ventilation — around 14 feet above the ground — without a staircase.“Only the jailer will be in the position to explain how a prisoner can commit suicide inside the jail premises in the presence other inmates. We don’t have much details about the deceased as he was not arrested in our area,” said SB Suryavanshi, assistant commissioner of police. The jail authorities have recovered a suicide note from the spot. “In the note the deceased has held a police officer from Mulund police station responsible for the drastic step. However, the credibility of the note is still a matter of investigation,” said Sanjay Yenpure, deputy commissioner of police (zone-II).Yenpure added that the deceased had extortion and kidnapping cases registered against him with Rabale, Dombivli and Mulund police stations. “The investigation of the case is still in its initial stages and hence it will be too early to say something about it. The case will be transferred to CID for further investigation,” he added.
