26-year-old held with charas sentenced to 10 years' RI

The special NDPS court on Tuesday convicted a 26-year-old man, who was found in possession of 1.150kg of charas worth Rs1.15 lakh, and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also penalised the accused for his crime, thus directing him to pay a fine of Rs1 lakh.

According to the prosecution case, the case dates back to March 16, 2012, when police officer Harishchandra Parmale, attached with the Ghatkopar unit of the Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC), received a tip-off in the morning hours about a drug deal which would take place at Bombay Engineering Works in Reay Road. Parmale arranged for a trap and he and his team approached the spot.

Public prosecutor Munna Inamdaar said, "Parmale had received information about the entire deal along with the description of the accused. Accordingly, they parked themselves near the spot. Around 2.30pm, they noticed a young man, matching the description that Parmale had got, carrying a red-coloured bag standing at the spot."

ANC officers then detained him, following which a personal search was conducted on him. During the search, he was found in possession of 1.150kg of some greenish balls which let out a pungent smell. The officers then conducted a preliminary test on the seized stuff which turned out to be charas. It was then sealed and sent to the forensic science laboratory (FSL) which also confirmed it to be charas. The prosecution examined total six witnesses in the case.
