In an unprecedented move, 24 cops from city police may lose their job as they have been absent from their duty. In some of the cases, said sources, policemen have been absent from service for over six months. In the wake of ongoing festivals and October 15 state election, constant reminders had been given to these policemen to resume service, but the department claims to have received no response from them.

"With the ongoing festivals and the state poll due, the department does require more men to report on duty," said a police officer.

"We have identified 24 policemen ranging from constables to head constables posted with Local Arms Division. Despite repeated notices and reminders, these policemen have been absent from their duty. They were also asked to appear before their superiors, so that they could be stationed for bandobast duty, but they failed to respond," said Vijay Chavan, additional commissioner of police, local arms division.

Chavan further added that an inquiry would be initiated. "Even if they are suspended, they would still get 50 per cent remuneration. We are contemplating whether these policemen should be dismissed from service, just to set an example for others," Chavan said.

"It is important to take some strong action against such negligent policemen. A policemen does not get his salary if he is absent without informing his department, but he is still a part of the force. Such cops are a bad example for others, who want to work hard," said another police officer.
