22 seized vehicles parked under WEH flyover gutted

Around 22 vehicles were destroyed in a fire below Magathane Bridge on the Western Express Highway in Borivli (E). The incident occurred on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. No casualties were reported in the mishap.

Bharat Worlikar, senior inspector of Kasturba Marg police station, said, “There were about 22 vehicles, including cars and mini tempos, parked under the bridge. All the vehicles were seized by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in 2010 in several cases of cheating. The space below the bridge was used to park these seized vehicles.”

He added that the police is yet to ascertain whether this was an accident or done by drunks in the neighbourhood. “There are no CCTV cameras installed in the area. But we are questioning locals to find out what went wrong. The compound wall that existed there collapsed a while ago,” added Worlikar.

Four fire brigades doused the fire by 3am. No case has been registered and investigations are underway.

An officer from the EOW said, “These are vehicles seized in different cases. We cannot remove them until the case is disposed of by the court. So such vehicles usually lie there.”
