2 years on, fast-track court tries KEM killer mom

Twenty seven-year-old Deepika Parmar, who allegedly flung one of her premature twins out of a KEM Hospital window in October 2010, is being tried by a Sewri fast-track court for murder.

With the defence gearing up to fight this unique case, it is depending a lot on the doctor who was treating her at KEM hospital to take the stand as a witness.

On October 26,2010, Deepika allegedly threw her one-and-a-half-month-old baby girl from KEM hospital’s bathroom window.

The KEM hospital’s doctors who examined her said that she was suffering from severe prenatal depression which had continued to the postpartum stage, and that may have been behind the reason behind her act.

Devendra Yadav, Deepika’s lawyer, said, “For the defence, we will be presenting Dr Shubhangi Parker, the then head of the Department of Psychiatry, as a witness. It was under her that Deepika was taking treatment. Her statement plays a crucial role in this case.”

Deepika’s medical reports clearly state that she was suffering from severe postnatal depression when she committed the act.

According to Deepika’s advocate, she has a history of depression due to previous failed pregnancies. “She had a miscarriage before her due date. Later, she delivered a baby girl who died within five days due a heart ailment. In October 2010, she prematurely delivered twins who were on life support after they were born. She was depressed,” Yadav said.

The trial, which began on September 13, will have its next hearing on September 25. “Deepika doesn’t want to talk about the incident. She is happy in her own world with her child,” said Yadav.
