Two boys were electrocuted on Sunday afternoon while they were playing cricket at Daud Baug near Navrang cinema in Andheri (West).

According to the police, the deceased, Kadar Hussain Shaikh, 19, and Mohammed Mustaffa Khan, 20, were residents of Andheri (West). Shaikh was working in a private company as a salesman, while Khan was an electrician.

“Both were playing cricket with their other friends at a ground at Bardawadi. Khan climbed up a water tank nearby to look for their cricket ball. He accidentally touched a loose electric wire because of which he received an electric shock. On seeing him, Shaikh rushed to help him. But he, too, suffered an electric shock,” said senior police inspector V Bhoite of the DN Nagar police station.

He added that on realising what had happened, other friends playing with the duo raised an alarm. A cricket tournament organised by a local corporator was in progress in another part of the playground. On hearing their cries for help, the other boys rushed to rescue them. They admitted the duo to Cooper Hospital.

But the two were declared dead on admission, said Bhoite.
“The loose wire belongs to Reliance Energy. We are trying to find out how and why the naked wire was lying exposed and who is responsible for this. A case of negligence would be registered against the authority or person responsible,” said Bhoite.

A Reliance Energy spokesperson said: “Our supply up to the society meter runs perfectly well. However, the society’s motor pump was faulty and thus the boys got electrocuted. As a precautionary measure, the building’s electricity supply has been temporarily disconnected. Officials of the public works department will investigate further.”
