18 held for illegal betting at Mahalaxmi racecourse

The police claimed that the arrested persons connived with a few RWITC officials and indulged in making wrong entries of the accepted bet amount over the ongoing horse race.

The Tardeo Police have arrested 18 people allegedly involved in illegal betting at the Mahalaxmi racecourse and have seized Rs 1.41 crore in cash during their raid on Friday. The police claimed that the arrested persons connived with a few RWITC officials and indulged in making wrong entries of the accepted bet amount over the ongoing horse race. This led to a loss of government revenue worth crores of rupees, by tax evasion.

The arrested have been identified as Marzbaan Mehta, Abbas Baig, Rajneesh Singh, Shekhar Pawar, Porush Irani, Nitesh Thakkar, Rahul Dhanega, Ashok Rathod, Milan Gandhi, Hakim Khan, Jaisingh Kankal, Ghanshyam Dakshini, Kishan Motwani, Pradeep Sahu, Sanjay Koteja, Ketan Gandhi, Anand Yadav and Rajkumar Arora.

Specific information was received by deputy commissioner of police, zone III, Abhinash Kumar, that at Mahalaxmi racecourse, some stall owners are conniving with few RWITC officials and are indulging in making wrong entries of accepted bet amount from the ongoing horse race, which is causing loss of revenue to the government by tax evasion.

In order to verify the veracity of the information and carry out a successful raid, at 70 policemen, including 20 police officers were handpicked from Nagpada, Byculla, Worli and Agripada police stations.

Around 7.30 pm a raid was conducted on 21 stalls which were accepting bets at the racecourse and 18 persons were taken into custody. The police had seized 29 laptops, mobile phones, calculators, cash Rs 1.41 crore and documents which had wrong entries of bets accepted.

"We have registered a case against 18 stall owners and officials of RWITC at Tardeo police station on charges of cheating and common intention under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Bombay Racecourse Licensing Act.

The members of RWITC involved in the racket has not yet been disclosed," said DCP Abhinash Kumar.

The arrested persons were produced before a local court on Saturday and were remanded to police custody till December 24.
