For the first time, religious structures that have been deemed as illegal by the Central Railway (CR), will be demolished. These are the ones that are presently constructed on railway land and have occupied space.

According to CR officials, there are 166 such structures that have been built right from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) till Lonavala, Kasara, Panvel on railway premises. "These religious structures of different faith have been built illegally over the years. As per the order from High Court, we are demolishing them and retaining our land," said a senior CR official.

In fact, on January 23, CR authorities had issued an advertisement that mentioned list of illegal religious structures within their premises that shall be demolished. The notification stated as 'the Honorable High Court of Mumbai has passed an order directing the demolition and removal of all unauthorised and illegal religious structures such as Temples, Masjids, Churches, Gurudwaras. etc., situated within the jurisdiction of the government and municipal corporation.

Numbers increase as one proceeds north wards.
