On January 19, over 1500 residents of Mumbra-Kalwa-Kharegaon-Shil took out a morcha to Thane district collector's office protesting against privatisation of power distribution in their area. A bandh, supported by Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress, Dharmarajpaksha, was also observed. People took to streets in spite Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde's assurance to withhold the contract awarded to Torrent Power for power distribution in these areas.

Earlier this month, Torrent Power was appointed by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) as electricity distribution franchisee for three sub-divisions under Thane.

The company was about to start its operations from January 26 this year. "We will not let Torrent open its office or function in our area," said Umesh Patil, Shiv Sena corporator from Kalwa-Kharegaon. This was a quite surprising move as guardian minister Eknath Shinde from Sena had assured on Friday evening to withhold the contract awarded to Torrent power.

Speaking about Eknath Shinde's assurance to withhold the contract awarded to Torrent, senior NCP leader Anand Paranjape said, "It was just a verbal assurance. There was no formal or written communication from the minister. Moreover, it was power minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule's decision to award the contract, not Shinde's. We cannot trust last-minute assurances."

Interestingly, the proposal not opposed by NCP or Sena in the assembly.

MSEDCL took the decision since it suffers huge loss of in Thane district.
