A 23-year-old engineer lost his life, while his three friends were left injured after the car they were travelling in rammed into a divider at LBS Marg in Mulund early on Friday.

According to the Mulund police, the deceased, identified as Siddhart Bhandari, and his friends Kamlesh Mohpal, 25, Nilesh Vani, 23, and Advaitya Sharma, 25, had come to Mulund to drop a colleague. After dropping her, they were on their way home in Powai. When the car reached near Vasant Oscar complex on LBS Marg, Sharma, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle and dashed into the divider.

"The car was going at quite a speed when Sharma lost control and dashed into the divider. It then went a few metres ahead and hit some bikes parked on the side of the road," said Rajaram Vanmane, senior inspector, Mulund police station.

The locals informed the police, who reached the spot and rushed all four to the hospital. Bhandari sustained a severe head injury and was declared dead after admission, while Vani is admitted in Fortis hospital in a serious condition. "We have arrested the driver of the car and taken blood samples of all of them. We are awaiting the reports. We want to ascertain whether they had consumed alcohol; if the tests are positive for it, we will add relevant sections," said Vanmane.
