Many thanks for highlighting the present condition of Versova beach. A long time ago, Versova beach was one of the best beaches in Mumbai. But today, my heart bleeds seeing its present condition.
I was born and brought up in Versova. In fact, my parents came to Versova as early as 1928; my father Dr. N.R. Purandare was the first doctor to serve the fishing community in this area. I still remember a clean and calm Versova beach until about 1973.
It was only after 1977 that the beach was spoiled, when people hailing from areas near Bandra railway station were moved to Versova beach by a politician, who later went on to become a minister in the Maharashtra government.
The news that MTDC is planning to develop the entire 3km stretch for water sports, including banana boat rides and parasailing, is heartening news, indeed. I hope that the native fishermen of Versova benefit from the planned development. I hope that happy days will come again for Versovaites. Once again, thank you for the timely highlight of the problems plaguing Versova beach.
