Thappad Story:

Thappad is a story of Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) whose seemingly perfect life is shattered when her husband Vikram (Pavail Gulati) slaps her once in a party. But is one slap enough to question what a relationship stands for?

Thappad Review:

She has a routine. She wakes up every morning at 6 am, takes care of her mother in law, wakes up her husband, feeds him breakfast, drops him to the car with his tea, keys, and wallet in hand, finishes chores around the house all day, cooks dinner, feeds the family and sleeps.

Taapsee’s character Amrita is that of a textbook housewife until, her husband, Vikram, played by Pavail Gulati slaps her thunderously in the heat of the moment when she tries to pacify him, come in “between”, while he is angry.

Thappad is the story of a woman who refuses to move on from that incident. Why? Because it should never have happened in the first place.

It's about a woman who believes that whether it is, one slap or ten, the repercussions that a “Thappad” has on an individual’s psychology are the same. It is about Amrita wanting everyone around her to understand that it was never about how many times she was hit, but that it just happened so normally.

It raises questions we all need answers to, collectively, as a society; What does it take to keep a family/relationship together? Just a silent acceptance of all that is unfair? And is it the responsibility of just the woman to do so? Thappad will surely make you uncomfortable but that is what makes it so important.

Written and directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film’s biggest strength is that it does not issue a sermon about what it’s trying to convey.

Taapsee as Amrita is restrained and captures the emotions of her character with enormous grace. Pavail Gulati does a brilliant job of playing Taapsee’s husband, an ambitious man with a vulnerable side which makes him relatable.

The supporting cast consisting of Maya Sarao, Ratna Pathak Shah, Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, Tanvi Azmi, Dia Mirza, Manav Kaul and Ram Kapoor are all excellent without exception.

However, Amrita’s father, a character played by Kumud Mishra and his scenes with Taapsee, constitute some of the most heartwarming moments of the film. The actor is convincing as the doting father faithfully being the wind beneath his daughter’s wings. I promise it will make you want to be your father’s little girl again.

Thappad Verdict:

Thappad will stay with you long after it’s over and that is a testament to its brilliant, to the point storytelling. You would want to stop and ask yourself, “Thappad. Bas itni si baat? (A slap. That’s it?).”
