After capturing the e-commerce segment, Flipkart is now planning to tap the segment of the population that still shies away from shopping online or isn't too comfortable buying phones online.

For this, Flipkart will be using an “assisted e-commerce model” that will let customers interested in buying phones to walk to the nearest store the e-commerce company has tied up with, and use, experience the phone before buying it. Shopkeepers at the store will also help customers buy the phone at the end of the experience, using Flipkart's mobile app.

Right now, the facility is restricted to phones only. For the 'assisted e-commerce model', Flipkart has tied up with stores, where customers can go and see the phone in physical form.

Once the order is placed, the customer can choose to take delivery at the store or at his/her home.

This app will help bring a huge chunk of the population that shies away from buying mobile phones online, to Flipkart. It might prove to be especially beneficial to mobile brands like Motorola and Alcatel that sell models exclusively on Flipkart, the report said.

While the stores right now have only been set up in big cities, Flipkart eventually plans to take the model to tier III and tier IV cities.

The experience centres are available at the mobile retail chain Spice Hotspot, which has 30 outlets across 19 cities.

In line with reaching out to offline customers, Flipkart also announced an extension of its customer-centric campaign 'FlipkartConnect' in Uttar Pradesh to educate and enable consumers to understand benefits of online shopping.

"Our customer base across UP, especially Lucknow, has grown phenomenally in the last one year. Consumers from this region are enjoying online shopping. With this insight, we have rolled out FlipkartConnect campaign in this region and we hope to double our customers soon," Flipkart's Vice President (Business Development) Adarsh Menon told reporters.
