The sultry look is all yours when draped in a lacy outfit. No, we aren’t talking of lacy lingerie here, the fabric has now turned runway material and is the new zing for the season. Irrespective of the slight nip in the air, it’s a must-have in every girls wardrobe! International designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Chanel and many others have created a collage of lacy garments for their new collection, but what makes this design popular is the antiquity that it brings to the wearer.

Luxury brand consultant Varuni Mohan says that the lace has evolved over the years. “Two years ago, Stella McCartney started a revolutionary trend of lace jumpsuits which kickstarted the demand for this frilly fabric. Lace has now made its way into almost all reputed designer’s collections. In fact, for the Fall-Winter 2010, lace was the key look in most international designers’ collection and Dolce & Gabbana went on to create their Spring-Summer collection in white lace with chiffon fabric,” she says, adding, “The key to wearing lace the right way is to keep it minimal. Colours and silhouettes are two important perspectives to be kept in mind. For instance, for a cute look, team powdered pink or white nude skin tones in shift, ballerina or even straight dresses. For a sexy look, dark tones such as black, blue or even silver in layers is a good idea.”

As a fabric, lace, when used minimally, is eye-catching. Sheer, when combined with lace, is more elegant than the plain old lace and the effect is a very pleasant one. Designer Reshma Kunhi elucidates the use of lace and its combination with sheer, which has created a niché market. “The lace and sheer combo is a recent development and it works best on maxi dresses in a variety of colours. In fact, floral and cutwork lace has also been in trend.

Lace with a combination of sheer and netted fabrics has been revolutionsed by Dolce & Gabbana in their next collection,” she states, adding, “Closer home, one of Forever New’s recent collections had a lot of lace detailing on strapless dresses.”

Of late, lace has been restructured to form myriad patterns with various combinations of sheer, tassles or even sewed on a regular tee. Designer Sarita Mandoth goes on to explain the types of lace and what clothes go best with such an embellishment.

“Lace is in right now and it is one of my favourite fabrics to work on. One would be amazed to know the number of laces available — be it valenciennes, chantill or even crochet. A lot of designers are opting for vests, long jackets or even shrug dresses with lace work on it. Sheer lace can be used on saris,” she states.

Be it a simple lace hemming, on the sleeves or even lacework on the neckline, need we say, it’s time to lace up this season.
