Today marks the day where people's focus needs to shift on bones. Like every year, World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated on October 20th as a reminder to take extra care of your bones so that they do not turn brittle.

What exactly is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition when the bone turns fragile and is thus susceptible to fracture. It is quite common in women aged above 35, especially those who have just hit menopause.

What causes Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis, even if less likely, could also hit men. It is especially visible among people who do not exercise or get enough sunlight. It is also likely to occur among smokers and heavy drinkers. Not including enough calcium in your diet could also sometimes lead to Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is also genetic at times and thus, any person with a history of fractures in the family could be affected by Osteoporosis.

Symptoms:

Pain in spinal area - Fractures in the spine could cause pain in the back area, mainly lower back. It usually develops a hump as women grow older.

Hip fractures heal slowly - Since the bone does not heal completely and quickly, the hip fracture heals very slowly. The condition turns serious and needs immediate check-up and healing, because according to research, 20% women died in the subsequent year after the injury.

Diagnosis:

The best way to diagnose Osteoporosis is through a dual-energy X-ray. At many occasions, people are unaware that they have got a brittle bone and fracture. A DEXA could point out the minutest of details and help you treat it better.

Treatment:

Medication, workouts and putting a stop to smoking and alcohol goes a long way in treating Osteoporosis. Getting a dose of Vitamin D is also necessary to help keep the bone strong. It is also advisable to avoid gluten during the treatment.

Either way, visit your generalists, internists, gynecologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists or orthopedists immediately if in pain.
