World Oceans Day 2020: History, significance & this year's theme

June 8th is celebrated as World Oceans Day to remind everyone about the importance of oceans' role in our everyday life. 

The United Nations day celebrates the role of the oceans in everyday life and inspires action to protect the ocean and sustainably use marine resources. This day holds great significance as we discuss various methods to save oceans for our future generation. 

World Ocean Day History

As per the United Nations website, it celebrates World Oceans Day every year on 8 June. Many countries have celebrated this special day since 1992, following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day”.

World Ocean Day 2020 Theme

This year's theme for World Ocean Day is 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean'. On this day, people hold several events, seminars, rallies to raise awareness about oceans. But due to the coronavirus outbreak, this year's celebrations will be held online.

The rate by which we are polluting our ocean bodies is alarming.
