As Christians across the world prepare to celebrate Easter, many will look to the Vatican to lead them in prayer.

Pope Francis will lead the Easter Vigil at the St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican at 12:50 am on Sunday. The Easter Mass will be celebrated by the Pope at 1:45 pm.

After the Easter mass the Pope will give his 'Urbi et Orbi' blessing from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica.

The Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter. The week marks the days before Jesus Christ's crucifixion. It culminates with the Easter Mass which celebrates the resurrection of Christ. 

Easter also marks the end of the period of Lent for Christians, which began with Ash Wednesday on February 10.
