Designer Nikhil Thampi on his runway comeback this season...
Designer Nikhil Thampi has been a red carpet favourite thanks to his va va voom dresses with thigh-high slits and embellished, ‘come-hither’ pantsuits. His legion of fans include B-Town glamazons like Kangana Ranaut, Kajol, Sara Ali Khan, Kalki Koechlin, Esha Gupta and Vaani Kapoor. After a sabbatical from the rough-and-tumble of fashion weeks (though he’s been doing standalone shows), when Nikhil was busy with 11 projects and focused on the brand expansion, he is back at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 19 with a collection titled, ‘Semicolon;’.
“We didn’t want to over commit and not deliver so took a break. Also, I observed that the fun element in fashion was missing and the overall aesthetic gravitated towards causes and literature. I noticed that pieces on the runway lacked an individual voice. Hence, we make a comeback with an evolved aesthetic,” shares he.
This season, NT has toyed with prints for the first time and also flirted with off-body silhouettes. The offerings see him playing with different lengths and proportions. “The last part of the collection comprises monochromes, which transitions into metallics and finally into our signature red carpet pieces,” he adds. When we ask him about the showstopper he quips, “I’m of the belief that the celebrity showstopper take away from the collection’s voice.” The trans-seasonal luxury collection includes both pret and occasion wear.
