It would be safe to say that the general interest in comic books hasn’t ever taken a dip. The days of Tinkle and Chacha Chaudhary seemingly aren’t over yet; although slick Frank Miller graphic novels began trickling into bookstores. Soon enough, Hollywood paved the way for Bollywood to realise the potential in turning their films into comic book formats.
Recently, actor Shah Rukh Khan launched his upcoming film Ra.One’s graphic novel version, G.One — The Journey Begins.
Another film, Shaadi of the Dead, starring actor Abhay Deol, released Zombie Talkies: Blood Fest In Bollywood. The trend is here to stay if you take into account India’s first Comic Con Express that will soon entice Mumbai’s comic book community in October end.
Earlier this year, the Comic Convention at Dilli Haat received tremendous feedback that got the organisers thinking. It snowballed into India’s very own Comic Con Express, a travelling version that will tour a different city each year. This time, it will be aamchi Mumbai.
Jatin Varma, founder of Comic Con India and Pop Culture Publishing, explains, “Bollywood taking to comic books is a very good thing. It brings more attention to the industry backed by star power. Right now the comic book industry, though growing, is still niche. Anything that brings the spotlight on it and helps it grow is welcome. People are trying out different genres and creating original characters, it’s all quite exciting.”
Actor Kunal Kapoor, who will be playing the comic character of Doga in his upcoming film, is an ardent comic book fan. He will in no way miss the event. “It’s very exciting that a Comic Con is coming here. Internationally, everyone from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg to Steven Soderbergh, is part of comic cons,” he says. The actor’s favourites include Watchmen, Lone Wolf and Cub, American Vampire and Scalped.
Another comic book lover, singer Sukhwinder Singh says, “Comic books have a calming effect on me. I still enjoy reading Chandamama. And yes, there are some films and characters that can be told beautifully through comic books.”
There will be book launches, workshops, special previews and a costume contest.
