The noodle world beyond Maggi
The recent findings of high MSG and lead content in Maggi noodles lend credence to the deep-seated distrust of the noodle brand many harboured for years. JBM surveys the instant noodle market for 'non Maggi' possibilities
Wai WaiThis Himalayan delight has a distinct flavour, along with a host of other condiments attached – onion oil, masalas and some chilli powder. Wai Wai can be had either raw or cooked. Mix it with veggies or a variety of meat. Make sure to add some garlic for a sumptuous meal. New versions include hakka and instant cup noodles.
KokaThese noodles, originally from Singapore, are quite popular in northeast India. They come in a variety of flavours – tom yam, lobster, curry, laksa, fat-free etc. – at an affordable price. Found in cans, bottles, cups and packets, Koka is best eaten on the go, without much fuss.
MamaThai-based Mama noodles also has a gluten-free variant. Other flavours include kimchi, shrimp, tom yum and duck. Most varieties simply require hot water.
Ching's SecretMost of these noodles are not instant. There's a variety of flavours to choose from – Pad Thai, Manchurian, and hakka, in flavours like Lemongrass Chilli, Hot and Spicy and Schezchow.
DesiAmThe brand sells noodle cooking sets for a complete meal. These can be prepared within an hour. It also helps that they sell a lot of condiments. Some of the flavours include pad thai and thai glass.
