With the flourishing Indian wine scene, vineyards are opening their doors to those curious about wine and thus travellers are no longer breaking the bank to buy a ticket to France to experience a vineyard. “Wine tourism takes the wine enthusiasts much beyond the alcohol or the taste of wine,” says
Avijit Barman, founder, www.thewineclub.in.
Of late, wineries in Nashik and even Bangalore conduct specialised wine tours where an individual is acquainted with the process of wine making right from picking and crushing grapes to the bottling of wine by a ‘wine guru’.
Avijit explains, “The wine trails are carefully mapped, chosen and put together in a seamless journey plan, keeping in mind the most important needs of a wine traveller which are luxury, comfort, quality of wine education and finally the Wine Tasting.”
Right from young professionals who are new to the world of wine, to seasoned gourmets and even wine connoisseurs have shown interest in the idea of exploring these newer wine destinations and aren’t afraid to spend a leisurely weekend studying a bottle or two. Adityaraj Mehta, media student, who visited a vineyard in Nashik says, “A wine connoisseur or not, the entire process of learning the journey of a grape from the fields into the bottle is simply fascinating! It was a wonderful experience.” And for wine newbies, it is far more accessible than the expensive tours to international vineyards.
In order to encourage wine lovers to explore their vineyards, the wineries have packages to suit every budget. A wine tour can cost from as little as Rs3, 500 to as much as
Rs17,000. It all depends on how much moolah you are willing to shell out and the kind of package you are looking for.
So this weekend, slip on a pair of shorts and tee, put on your comfy shoes and head to the nearest vineyard to discover the secret of winemaking.
