Denim on denim has always been B-Town’s favourite attire and if the recently-concluded men’s fashion week in London, Milan and Paris are a yardstick to go by, then the head-to-toe denim is back for Fall Winter 19 seen on the runways of MSGM, E Tautz, County of Milan and Daniel Fletcher. While MSGM used a thick version of the fabric with an acid-washed treatment, Daniel Fletcher’s look had topstitching all over. Last week, Ayushmann Khurrana was spotted in a matching twin-set, which he accessorised with a pair of sunnies and a baseball cap. Sonam K Ahuja and Anushka Sharma have shown us interesting ways to style this closet essential in their numerous airport looks. So, the question remains — what is it about the allure of the classic that makes it a sartorial mainstay irrespective of trends and the seasons? Designer Narendra Kumar, who’s showcasing at Lakme Fashion Week, observes, “The denim suit is definitely back especially the double-breasted version as formal becomes casual and evolves towards athleisure,” he says.

A VERSATILE PIECE

Denim has been a classic for many decades as the fabric can be catered to all shapes and sizes. Designer Nikhil Thampi, who makes a comeback to the Mumbai Fashion Week this season, says, “A denim suit adds as an essential style statement to the wardrobe, where one can dissect the suit and wear it separately. It is a versatile piece to invest in, I would love to see the touch of it in Indian wear with an interesting twist. In the past, we have seen women wearing the denim sari, while we have seen men mix and match it in Indian wear. I wish I was playing with the fabric this season, but unfortunately, I’m not. If I were to add a touch of denim to my collection, I would definitely introduce cool waistcoats, baggy denim trousers or I would do a slouchy oversize blazer for men. A denim trench could also be a very interesting look.”
